Armaeus’s claws scraped against the frozen stone as he paced his chamber, each breath forming a cloud of vapor in the frigid air. The ice-encrusted walls seemed to close in around him, a prison of his own making, deep within the Grotte du Mas-d’Azil.
“The time draws near,” he growled, his crimson eyes flashing in the dim light. “I can feel it in my bones.”
For countless lifetimes, he had waited, plotted, and schemed, preparing for this moment. The prophecy burned in his mind like a brand, its promise of revelation both a torment and a temptation. Three days of darkness, and then…
Armaeus clenched his fists, feeling the raw power surge through his veins. He was the Daemon, the bringer of nightmares, and yet this mere girl threatened everything he had built.
“The Morrigan,” he spat, the name bitter on his tongue. “That meddlesome goddess thinks she can protect the child from me.”
