In this prequel to TJ Mott’s science fiction series “The Thaddeus Marcell Chronicles,” Amanda Poulsen is a tough young woman with a troubled history. Raised by a mercenary group called the Hyberian Raiders, orphaned twice by age twenty, and forced into a lifestyle of drifting and petty crime, she’s seen it all. One day, she will become a talented and respected officer in Thaddeus Marcell’s organization, but until then, she must overcome tragedy, deep heartbreak, and impossible circumstances.
Any other woman would fail. But Amanda Poulsen is a survivor, the last person in the galaxy worthy of being called a Hyberian Raider.

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I received an email from Amazon about the Pen to Publish 2019 contest, which is for short stories. I always had a few ideas about doing some sort of "prequel" to my series, "The Thaddeus Marcell Chronicles," but there's simply not enough there to write full-length novels. The series is basically the "start of time" for me.
But after hearing about the contest, I realized I had enough to do a short story, and so I quickly wrote and published "Thaddeus Marcell: The Terran Engineer" and "Amanda Poulsen: The Hyberian Raider." These act as prequels or origin stories for the two main characters in my series.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Since this is a short story (~9700 words), there's not a lot of character depth here apart from the main character. Obviously I'm focusing on the existing character of Amanda Poulsen. In my main series, she's a very tall and fit woman, and she's even a former kickboxing champion, which I thought was necessary for her to survive as an attractive woman working in the male-dominated mercenary industry. She knows how to take care of herself.
But she clearly suffers from deep-seated anger and aggression issues, and she keeps everyone at arms-length as if she's afraid of letting anyone get close to her. This short story serves to explain how she became that way.
Author Bio:
TJ Mott is a software engineer based in Omaha, Nebraska. He writes in his free time and has three self-published novels and two short stories that involve the adventures of a interstellar mercenary company owned by Thaddeus Marcell, who has a side quest to locate his missing homeworld, Earth.
Some of his hobbies include reading, writing, shooting sports, dirt biking, 3D printing, and accidentally starting small garage fires with welders. But you'll never see him because he's almost always camouflaged by wearing a Mossy Oak jacket.
