Tell us about yourself.
I’m Felicity Hewitt, a mother of three by day and an indie author by night. My passion for writing began after I read my first fantasy romance novel. I fell in love with the story and was devastated when I finished it. Let me tell you, book hangovers? They’re real, and they’re brutal. I missed the characters—those fictional friends I had grown attached to—which inspired me to create my own. A spark ignited within me, and writing fiction has been my passion ever since.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Midwest, which affected my writing because I pull from this area of the country when describing climates and the various seasons.
Growing up in the Midwest meant a quiet, suburban life, so I enjoyed a lot of quiet time to myself. Writing is the perfect hobby to have because you can work on it almost anywhere.
What was your journey to getting published like?
It has been quite a big learning curve. As an independent, self-published author, I've had to learn how to do everything myself. Who knew writing the book was only the beginning?
I've learned to wear a lot of hats as an indie author, from formatting and editing, to networking and marketing, and I've still got a lot to learn!
What’s the best piece of feedback you’ve ever received?
One of my beta readers was also an ARC reader, and she said the difference between the two drafts was staggering, and she was impressed by how much I'd grown as an author.
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Just go for it! Try to create a daily writing habit, even if it's only a paragraph or a hundred words. Write, even when you don't feel like it. Writing is like a muscle. You need to work it out for it to grow stronger.
What’s a fun fact about you that your readers might not know?
I love to bake. I don't get to do it as often as I'd like to, but I've always enjoyed it. I especially like decorating iced sugar cookies and frosting cakes.
What’s your guilty pleasure book or genre?
Under the Oak Tree. It is by far my favorite fantasy romance, and it's what inspired me to start writing.
What’s your favorite quote about writing?
"Write like it matters, and it will." – Libba Bray
When you’re not writing, how do you like to spend your time?
I enjoy gaming or watching movies and TV. I also get into various fandoms and love immersing myself in their lore.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I loved the book Holes as an elementary school kid. It was the first book I ever read more than once.
What has inspired you and your writing style?
Under the Oak Tree. I was obsessed with that book, and devastated when it was over. I missed the characters I'd grown attached to, so I decided to write my own story with characters of my creation. Writing has been my passion ever since.
How do you deal with negative reviews?
I try to remember that writing is subjective and that just because one person didn't like it doesn't mean that everyone will. I firmly believe that there are readers out there for every book.
How do you connect with your readers?
I use social media, primarily Instagram and X, and I've also started a quarterly newsletter to keep my readers updated on new releases and other exciting news.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Finishing The Shadow Knight Series. I aim to have the entire trilogy published by the end of 2025. After that, it's on to writing the next book!
Are there any Easter eggs or hidden messages in your work?
Yes. Book one contains easter eggs that readers will (hopefully) catch in books two and three. You'll have to read them to find out!
How do you approach writing dialogue for your characters?
I try to imagine myself in the characters' shoes and channel their personalities. Sometimes, I do such a good job that it feels as though I've become a conduit for them to speak through me.
If you could share one thing with your fans, what would that be?
I would want to thank them. Seriously, my biggest dream being a writer is about so much more than selling books. It's about connecting with readers. It's about putting my soul onto the page and displaying it for others to share a little piece of my heart. When a person reads my book and enjoys it, I'm honestly moved to tears every time. There's no greater feeling, so thank you, readers. You mean so much to me.
