What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
That’s a good question! Truthfully—really thinking about the question—I’d have to say I think I had to write it. Really, I think I just had to write it because the story was in me—a part of me.
In the last ten years I had facilitated numerous types of workshops in schools and corporations. Many workshops required me to develop different techniques and ideas to help that group of people deal with the issues they had. I can’t tell you how many pages of what I created for others sit inside my huge black briefcase. It’s packed with the issues I had to deal with, the ideas I came up with on how to tackle those issues, notes and some diary of the day.
Often I would get a call from some company or a school asking me to come in and after they would discuss with me why they needed a workshop, I would then design something for them—for that specific group of human beings. And when it’s over, I would tuck everything from that day or days into that huge black briefcase. And soon it longer was a briefcase; it was my treasure chest. And then so simply it happened one day at supper with one of my friends, a guy who has actually climbed Mt. Everest numerous times—he asked me why I was not writing about all I have done and my wife turned to me and said, “Yeah…why not?” And so I started to live that question: Can I do that? Can I actually write a book?
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
A lot of people ask me that! I guess that question comes from people’s desire to feel the book’s messages come from real experiences. Nowadays with so much reality TV, there seems to be this hunger for reality. I can’t say the book is totally based on reality, but it comes from so much of the reality I lived in my work. I would say although the work is fiction, many characters in the book come from real people I have worked with in my workshops. And some people and situations are very close to those that I have had encountered throughout my life.
